How to Tailor Your CV for Each Job Application
Sending the same CV to every job is the fastest way to get ignored. Recruiters spend an average of 7 seconds on an initial screen — and if your CV doesn't immediately mirror the language of the job description, it never makes it past that first glance. Tailoring your CV isn't about starting from scratch each time; it's about strategic alignment of your existing experience with what the employer is asking for.
Why generic CVs fail
Most applicant tracking systems (ATS) scan for keyword matches between your CV and the job description. If the keywords in the JD — skills, tools, qualifications, industry terms — don't appear prominently in your CV, the ATS ranks you lower, and a human may never see your application. Even when a human reads it, a generic CV signals that you haven't invested time in this specific opportunity.
The 3-minute tailoring method
You don't need hours. Here's the process:
- Extract the top 5 keywords from the job description — focus on hard skills, tools, and repeated phrases.
- Match your experience bullets to those keywords. If the JD says "managed a team of 5 engineers" and you've done that, make sure that bullet is prominent and uses similar language.
- Reorder sections by relevance. If the job emphasizes technical skills over education, put your tech stack section above your degree.
- Update your professional summary. One sentence referencing the company and role shows you're not copy-pasting.
When to skip tailoring
If a job description is vague or missing key details, don't waste time guessing. Apply with a strong general CV and save the tailoring effort for roles where the requirements are clearly articulated. Quality over quantity always wins.
Make it a habit
Tailoring gets faster with practice. After 5-10 applications, you'll develop an instinct for which keywords matter and which sections to adjust. The goal isn't perfection — it's showing the reader, human or machine, that you read the job description and responded to it.
